The Inspiring Race Sydney Olympic Park
Friday, 5 Mar, 2010
The Inspiring Race was held today as an exploration race against the clock to uncover Sydney Olympic Park’s women in sport achievements, the program was run this morning with local high school children attending. The race was followed by inspirational speeches by Jayme Paris (Paralympian cyclist) and Allison Shreeve (Windsurfing Champion).
Allison has recently agreed to be an ambassador for Womensport NSW along side Liz Ellis, Kerri Portharst and Amy Winters. "I'm looking forward to being a role model for young women, motivating them to continue in sport and reach their full potential not just athletically but in every part of their lives" said Allison.
The Inspiring Race was part of the annual Women’s Sports Festival 5 - 7 March now in its second year and leads into International Women's Day which is marked on March 8 every year. International Women’s Day is a major day of global celebration of the United Nations for the economic, political and social achievements of women.
The Women’s Sports Festival is a three-day major event at Sydney Olympic Park promoting women in sport through a combination of sports events, educational programs and participation activities. The event has been achieved through a collaboration between the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and its many sports partners.
The objective of the Women’s Sports Festival is to encourage girls and women to participate in all levels of sport as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. As well as raising the profile and promotion of women’s sport through the clustering of a range of women’s sports activities together across a single weekend.
The 2010 Festival Schedule includes a range of women's sports events including:
1. Sydney Olympic Park Netball Cup 5, 6 and 7 March - an ANZ Championship pre-season tournament featuring seven top teams from Australia & New Zealand at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. Including the NSW Swifts, Melbourne Vixens, Adelaide Thunderbirds, West Coast Fever, Queensland Firebirds, Southern Steel and Central Pulse.
2. Gear Up Girl 6 March is a women's participation cycling event that motivates women to get involved in cycling with a choice of ride options, either a 15km Sydney Olympic Park loop or a 55km ride from Cronulla to Sydney Olympic Park. Gear up Girl is a women’s-only event that also raises money for the Oncology Children’s Foundation.
3. Women's International Pro Circuit Tennis 1 – 7 March attracts Australian and international players; bridging the gap between junior events and elite level WTA events. Participating players include Jamila Groth, Sophie Ferguson, and Casey Dellacqua who is making a comeback to top level tennis. The circuit gives an opportunity for players to earn their first world-ranking points and prize money as they embark on their professional career.
4. State Hockey Challenge 6-7 March NSW Arrows vs Canberra Strikers – Hockey NSW will host this first time event featuring some of Australia’s international women hockey stars.
